Dissociation

Medium: Mixed Reality (MR) Ceramic Interactive Installation

Experienced via: Meta Quest 3

Core Interaction: Audiences can use their hands to touch various parts of the sculpture, gradually melting the layer of ice covering the body. Through this interaction, viewers participate in a healing journey that transitions from a state of frozen dissociation to one of reintegration.

Theme: Dissociation explores the psychological defense mechanisms triggered by immense trauma. When pain exceeds the limits of what the body and consciousness can endure, a person detaches a fragment of their self from the present. They rely on numbness, detachment, and fragmentation to protect themselves from a complete psychological collapse.

The physical ceramic sculpture portrays this state through a black female torso: her arms are raised high, holding her own detached head, as if her body and consciousness have been forcibly separated. The white head is as pristine and translucent as jade, symbolizing the spiritual core that has been extracted from the agony. It is carefully safeguarded, temporarily distanced from the harm and erosion inflicted upon the physical body.

The black torso represents a shell enveloped in trauma. The shattered window frame and the red wound within the body point to traumatic experiences rooted in domestic and intimate relationships. Golden vines creeping from the ruptures entwine the entire body, their sharp thorns piercing the skin. These vines serve as metaphors for inescapable relationships, memories, and bindings—manifesting the suffocation, oppression, and pain induced by trauma, while also resembling the very scars it leaves behind.
